ELECTRON CINEMA means new experimental music set to old "found" films. In this, the 2nd edition, musicians such as Teppop, Walter de Maria, Kirke and Fos put music to such films as "Kill Rats Forever," "The Power of A Smile" and "Journey to the Center of a Soap Factory." A totally new experience in pairing film & music.

FILM DESCRIPTIONS FOR THE “ELECTRON CINEMA” SHOW ON DECEMBER 4th

KILL RATS FOREVER (Music by Teppop): Made to instruct farmers how to kill destructive rats, this 60’s “educational” film oozes with hillbilly charm and is crammed with close-ups of rats behaving badly. At the same time it promotes a chemical solution to every farmer’s dream – to “Kill Rats Forever.” If we have any farmers in the audience they might find some useful tips here and also enjoy the newly created electronic soundtrack.

THREE DRUG CASE STUDIES (Music by Satoy, Thule & Kalle Del Hey): These three short films, packed with primitive liquid-slide special effects, were produced to be honest and personal testimonies about the dangers of drug use in the late 60’s, now – with new soundtracks – transformed into something else entirely.

THE POWER OF A SMILE (Music by Walter De Maria): This is a classic “industrial motivational” film created in the 60’s to be shown to American workers and to teach them how much easier and joyful life is if we just smile a lot more. A kind of emotional engineering. This was one of many films created by Detroit’s Jam Handy Studios and features their trademark staginess and use of colourful back lighting.

LIPSTICK & DYNAMITE (Music by Kirke) : Women’s wrestling is the topic of this short film from the 50s as two women throw each other around the ring like sacks of lard. A trip back in time.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF A SOAP FACTORY (Music by Fos): This little gem of Danish industrial filmmaking (from the 30’s?) promotes a specific soap product while showing the process involved in making it. The viewer is treated to boiling globs of other-worldly substances cooking and smoking in huge vats while the gears, spindles, pullies and conveyer belts of antiquated machinery is set in motion – a visual poem of the later industrial revolution. A true Ballet Mechanique, and with a sound score now added to this silent marvel, a forgotten industrial film becomes a little avant-garde masterpiece complete with charmingly inventive titling design.
